A cozy winter afternoon inspired Miss Mary to start her bullet journal. She always wanted to own this analog system where she could include snippets of her life. She takes a peek down her memory lane…
“Oh!”, she exclaims. “How can I forget that one time?”, saying this she hurriedly starts working on her journal.
October 29, 2003,
It was the end of summer in India, with chilly mornings and cold nights it was evident the year was coming to an end. Everyone in my family was busy with work piling up - be it house chores or office. I was nine years old, the youngest in the house. That being said, having lunch and dinner on time was my only work that time.
November 15, 2003,
- Mary, darling can you feed the goldfish for me?
- Sure, dad.
“Let me just watch how Doraemon helps Nobita this time, he is screwed up, then I shall feed Bitsy,” I say to myself as I keep bingeing this Japanese cartoon series.
Later that day,
I hear dad shout in terror!!
I run downstairs, and I see Bitsy on the table. Dead!
He asks me whether I had fed Bitsy or not. I quickly nod "yes". One moment passed, and I lose myself.
I open my eyes to find myself in a dark room. I am not even sure if this is a room because all I see is blackness. I decide to walk forward while focusing on the solid pavement beneath my feet which is the only thing I am sure of.
“WELCOME TO SYNTHOLAPSE”
I pass by the only visible hoarding. I wonder what Syntholapse is.
Maybe this place? Who knows?
I find a bleak yellow light on my right and walk towards it.
Upon reaching I find a quiz machine.
ALL ANSWERS MUST BE ACCORDING TO YOU,
CLICK TO CONTINUE ---
As I click on the arrow a voiceover starts:
WELCOME TO SYNTHOLAPSE, IF YOU ARE WONDERING WHAT THIS PLACE IS WE ARE GLAD TO PROVIDE YOU WITH A BRIEF DESCRIPTION. YOU HAVE ENTERED A DIMENSION WHICH CANNOT BE ESCAPED ON YOUR WILLINGNESS.
YOU ARE HERE DUE TO YOUR INSINCERITY AND FALSITY. TAKE THE QUIZ TO HELP US FIND OUT IF YOU ARE WORTH SENDING BACK OR NOT! ALL THE BEST.
TIP: REALIZATION IS THE KEY.
I take a moment while I sit down on the pavement.
Am I dreaming? I feel dreaded with a hint of anxiousness. I am in fear of this dimension being real. I decide to take the quiz as I click on the bold green button saying PROCEED.
After about 10 mins I complete the questionnaire.
The machine says it’s loading the results. While the results were preparing, I take a look back on what I did before I was sent to this dimension. I do not know if this is real but what I did was not acceptable. Bitsy was my dad’s favorite goldfish, he brought Bitsy home last summer and since then they have been inseparable. I realize I have been careless and above all, I lied to my dad. I feel terrible--- weeps.
I hear the machine making alert noises and a red border appears. I guess I failed the test because that is what red means-- DANGER.
CONGRATULATIONS, WE FIND YOU WORTHY OF OWNING UP TO YOUR MISTAKES.
A sense of relief shivers down my body as I read these words. I got it!
Within a minute I feel a tingling effect in my head.

I wake up on my bed and as I open my eyes I find my dad hovering over me. I get up and hug him tightly while apologizing for my action. He tells me it’s okay as I have realized and owned up to myself. My mother runs towards me with a tint of tension on her face. She says, “You have been out for 30 mins, we just called the doctor.”
I have been feeling fine now but I decided not to tell them of my little adventure to Syntholapse because I am again left with the confusion of its reality.
Author's note:
Syntholapse is a dimension where people find themselves transitioned to when they lie. This story revolves around a girl named Mary, who got stuck in this spooky place, and it follows her journey to owning up to her mistakes.
