Dear Mikaru,
There hasn't passed a day when I haven't thought about you. I'm still trying to get used to the dirty air around here. It seems like every single time I walk in the street, I feel likechoking, then I look at everyone else, and they seem to be living just fine. How is it that they manage to live like this? It's disgusting. Not only is the air dirty, but so are the people. Mikaru, you should see the people that walk in these streets day and night. You can see them holding their Pradas and Guccis with their noses all stuck up in that filthy air looking down at everyone beneath them. There's not a single shop that isn't filled with people like that - numb to the pain and the hardship of those homeless in the streets and the ones responsible for producing the products they so easily buy. Everywhere I go, they walk, arms tainted with scars of shopping bags, bodies slathered with frictionless fabric - drugged from reality. Stomachs and mindsets filled with gluttony from the decadence and opulence that they cannot get enough of. People look at them and see alive beings, whereas I see their moon-lit bodies, revealing their barbaric nature. Don't you remember, Mikaru, how everyone thought I was the luckiest man alive to have been given the opportunity like this? The opportunity of a lifetime, they called it. Ha! Now, I look back on that, and all I can do is frown with boiling blood. Mikaru, the city that we fantasized about packed with grandeur and prosperity isn't filled but with a bunch of privileged stuck-ups who go to their sheets at night with not a single burden in the world. And as they sleep unconsciously of the squeals of the poor and ignorant of those, who they deem as below them in the twilight, we are left to rot in the shadows at their expense and great fortune.
Author's note:
"Twilight Sleep", as a pill that was given to women while giving birth, has the characteristic of putting the person in the unconscious state of being alive/awake. I feel that the state of unconsciousness, while being awake, could represent mindsets of wealthy people, more specifically - their relationship with those who are lower than them in societal status. In this letter, twilight sleep is the state in which those, who are privileged, are unconscious as they live and exist of those who are drowning in misfortune.
